If you have a business or your career involves you being your own publicist, it’s inevitable that you need a website. But how do you start? What platform do you use? How do you make it look nice and user-friendly at the same time? Here are my 5 top tips for making a website.
CHOOSE YOUR PLATFORM
You can’t go wrong with Squarespace or Wix. These 2 are the most popular web-design sites because they have pre-made templates, where you can just drag/drop. For those who don’t feel as confident with their aesthetic eye, use Squarespace. I personally enjoy Wix more because there’s more things you can play with to showcase personality, but it’s so easy to make your website look amateur if you’re not experienced.
You should keep your palette SIMPLE. Don’t go crazy with your colours. Pastels are my favourite to use because it’s subtle. Stay far away from bright colours. Stick with one ‘main’ accent colour and choose your other shades off of your accent colour. I personally like to use white as the base colour.
Keep it consistent. Particularly your fonts for your paragraphs and sub-headings. Keep your pictures displayed the same way/size. You want your audience to stay engaged and the easiest way to do that is to keep everything neat and clean.
Choosing your fonts might be one of the most important things when building a website. I’m going to be honest with you – there are 80% of fonts that will make your website suffer. A font can look ‘neat’ but also present itself to be amateur at the same time. My general rule of thumb is that you want to avoid people knowing right off the bat that you made your website yourself!
The website should scream ‘you.’ It should be formal and personal at the same time. There is only one you, & you better show that off!
